Week 4 - DISCIPLINE OF GOD

Day 5 : Discipline Helps Us To Come Close To God

Jeremiah 17:21-23
21 This is what the Lord says: Be careful not to carry a load on the Sabbath day or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem. 23 Yet they did not listen or pay attention; they were stiff-necked and would not listen or respond to discipline.

The people were working on the Sabbath, their day of rest (Exodus 20:8-11). Instead of entering the gates of the city on their way to worship, they continued the hustle and bustle of business like any other day. They considered making money more important than keeping God’s law. God always intended to use discipline to help his people.

Jeremiah 31:18
“I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning: ‘You disciplined me like an unruly calf, and I have been disciplined. Restore me, and I will return, because you are the Lord my God.

These words picture grief and mourning. Although Israel, the northern kingdom, had sunk into the most degrading sins, God still loved the people. A remnant would turn to God by repenting of their sins, and God would forgive. God still loves you despite anything you may have done. He will forgive you if you turn back to him.

Jeremiah 46:28
Do not be afraid, Jacob my servant, for I am with you,” declares the Lord. “Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only in due measure; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.”

God punished his people in order to bring them back to himself, and he punishes us to correct and purify us. No one welcomes punishment, but we should all welcome its results: correction and purity. What is stopping you from giving your full attention to God?

Challenge
- What do you give priority for in your life? (Academics, selfishness, self-glory, being competitive or God)
