Discipline

Proverbs 1:1-3
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;
3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;

Everyone wants to be disciplined. Discipline is a way of life since we were born. Disciplined by our parents (beatings), by school teachers, on the playground, by society, by college, by employers, by ultimately God.

Discipline if used correctly is necessary for salvation and happiness. If used incorrectly however, it can lead to a miserable life both within the Kingdom and outside.

1. God disciplines those He loves

Proverbs 3:11-12
11 My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

We are his sons that is why He disciplines us.

Why do we need discipline?

Proverbs 5:12-13
12 You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction!
13 I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors.

We need disciline so that we won't be prideful and listen to teachers and instruction. An undisciplined person is a prideful person.

Proverbs 6:23
For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,

Discipline leads us to eternal life.

2. Fools despise discipline

Proverbs 5:14,23
14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly."
23 He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.

Discipline allows to be diligent in reading our Bibles, praying, keeping from sin.

3. Discipline gives glory to God

John 15:8
This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

Proverbs 10:17
He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
