When we look at the greatest leaders in the world, we rarely see examples of submission and humility. Jesus was filled with these qualities. In this lesson we will see Jesusí attitude towards humility and submission. Let us learn from Jesus how we can take on that role.
1. Jesus the perfect example of Submission.
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter.
41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."
Do you have any area in your life where it is difficult to submit to God? (Time, money, meetings, discipler, leaderÖ)
How have you tried to over come? (Share an example from your life)
Jesus continued to go back to God until he got his heart right to do Godís will. Can you think of that last time you consistently prayed till your heart got right? When was the last time you prayed with your face to the ground? If so - How did you feel after?
Here are some extra scriptures on submission:
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Our submission problems will seem minor compared to what Jesus was willing to submit himself to, death on the Cross.
2. Jesus the perfect example of Humility.
3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Imagine Jesus with his disciples: He washed their feet, not caring how dirty they were, not caring where they came from, and what they stepped on. Then he dried it with the towel wrapped around him. Have you practiced this scripture lately? (Try it and see how humbling it is)
The challenge of this scripture is to have unlimited humility. This is Jesusí heart. How are your relationships with the brothers and sisters? Is there anyone you feel hard to be humble to? If there is anyone that you have to been humble to take the Jesus challenge.
Go wash their feet and share their good qualities with them. Build your friendships with humility. Here are some extra scriptures to help the areas of humility.
Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life.
Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Letís take on the heart of Submission and Humility like Jesus.
